About the Artwork

Anderson & Low’s “National Danish Gymnastic Team #1” is a series of photographs created between 1998 and 2002, focusing on the National Danish Gymnastic Team. The project explores themes of the four elements (Earth, Air, Water, Fire) and presents the gymnasts in a stylized, almost classical way, removed from the pressures of training and competition.

Key aspects of the project:
  • Collaborative approach:
The photographers and the gymnasts worked closely together to create the images.
  • Stylized abstraction:
The images are not focused on the gymnasts’ training or competition, but rather on a more artistic and abstract interpretation of their bodies and movement.
  • Classical influence:
The images evoke a sense of classical statuary, highlighting the gymnasts’ athleticism in a timeless and idealized manner.
  • Elements theme:
The project is divided into four sections, each focusing on a different element: Earth, Air, Water, and Fire, influencing the aesthetics and composition of the images.
