“Cabra en una Isla” reveals the playful, symbolic, and almost childlike side of the Costus universe. Executed in pastel on cardboard, the work stands out for its formal simplicity and for the deliberately naïf graphic language that still preserves the chromatic sophistication and rhythmic composition characteristic of the duo.

The central figure—a stylized goat built from soft contours and simplified proportions—appears in a tropical, dreamlike environment. It stands against an intense blue background evoking sky and sea, balancing the composition between the earthly and the insular. Its grey and pink tones give the animal a gentle, almost totemic presence, while its subtly smiling expression adds a touch of intimacy and narrative charm, typical of Costus’ more whimsical works.

Surrounding plants, rendered in vibrant turquoise, lilac, and green hues, create a rhythmic frame around the figure, turning the landscape into an imaginative setting where nature and fantasy merge. The pastel technique brings softness, blending, and a certain transparency—qualities that reinforce the poetic and carefree atmosphere of the scene.

“Cabra en una Isla” exemplifies how Costus could move effortlessly between the monumental and the intimate, the narrative and the symbolic, always maintaining a direct, vibrant, and expressive visual identity. The piece carries the unmistakable personal mark of Juan Carrero (Juan Costus), especially in its formal synthesis and spontaneous touch.
